Tip for a Successful Long Distance Move

1. Plan Ahead

Long-distance moves are a major life event, but planning ahead can make sure it goes smoothly. Contact moving companies early before starting to plan your move. Keep in mind summertime is the busier season for moving companies, and by planning ahead you won't have to worry about finding a mover at the last minute.

2. Get Estimates

Contact moving companies to come to your home and visually survey your belongings for the move. This allows them to give you an accurate price for your move.

3. Downsize

It is usually a good idea to take time and go through your belongings and decide what you still use or what you can get rid of.  Also, take a moment to consider if you will no longer need certain items at your new home.

4. Label Boxes

If you are packing yourself for the move, be sure to label your boxes while you are packing. Write on the outside of each box a list of the items that packed inside. Also, remember to mark what room the items should be placed into in the new home. Listing the item contents on the box will be a lifesaver when you are unpacking and trying to locate the remote control for your TV.

5. Keep Items You'll Need Upon Arrival with you

Keep personal documents such as your driver’s license, social security card, passport, and birth certificate with you. If you will need documents such as recent bank statements, tax returns, and/or pay stubs before your shipment arrives, do not pack them in your boxes. Basically, don’t pack anything you’ll need once you get to your new home before your shipment arrives; you’ll probably need these personal documents when you’re looking for or starting a job, and you’ll obviously need some clothes, sleeping materials, hygiene products, and a few other things to keep yourself sane while you wait for the moving truck to arrive.

6. Don't Pack Food or Liquids

Even non-perishable food runs the risk of getting crushed, or otherwise tarnished or ruined, or worse: attracting vermin. Don’t pack any food (or anything perishable). Likewise, even well-sealed containers of liquid might get jarred open, resulting in an unwanted seepage on all of your belongings.

7. Move in the Off-Season

This is not an option for many people, but moving companies tend to be busier in the summer season than they do during the fall, winter, and spring.

8. Soak in the Memories

Whether you’re moving due to a new job opportunity, looking for a change, this journey is not one to be taken lightly. While making the decision to move is without a doubt exciting, taking the time to soak in the memories is an important part of the process.

9. Get Familiar with your New Area

A tough thing about moving long-distance is your new town doesn't feel like home. Take the time to get out there and get acquainted with your new city, and your new city will quickly become your own.
